Motherhood is a whirlwind, and it’s easy to feel like your marriage takes a backseat. Between feedings, tantrums, laundry, and work, it can feel impossible to nurture your relationship with your spouse. But small, playful moments can make a big difference—without adding more to your to-do list.
A Little Story From My Life
My husband and I have this mini prank we play on each other, and it always makes me laugh.
Usually, one of us is doing something simple—scrolling Facebook, making a quick snack, cleaning up a mess, or just trying to zone out for a second. Then the other person will randomly call their phone.
And immediately, the reaction is always the same:
“Oh my gosh… seriously? Who is calling me right now?”
You rush to grab the phone, half-annoyed, half-panicked, thinking it’s going to be something important… and then you look down and realize it’s your spouse.
At that point, you just stare at them like 😐 and roll your eyes.
And they’re already laughing… which makes you start laughing… and suddenly what felt irritating turns into this quick little moment of connection.
It’s such a small thing, but it’s honestly one of my favorite reminders that we’re still us—even in the chaos of raising little kids.
4 Practical Ways to Keep Your Marriage Strong When Life Feels Overwhelming
1. Sneak in connection moments
Even a quick joke, a text, or a shared look across the room counts—tiny pauses build closeness.
2. Alternate responsibilities intentionally
Try letting your partner handle morning chaos or bedtime once a week—both of you get a mini reset.
3. Celebrate small gestures
Notice when your spouse does something kind or funny. Acknowledging it boosts both your mood.
4. Practice self-compassion
You don’t have to “do it all” to be a good mom or wife. Being present matters more than perfection.
You’re not failing at marriage or motherhood—you’re doing your best in a demanding season. Sometimes, the tiniest moments of connection are what sustain both your marriage and your sanity.
